Scientists have recently discovered that some species of bees use their legs to generate additional lift in order to fly faster and farther than they otherwise would be able to. This discovery comes after scientists only recently puzzled out why bees can even fly at all.
Why in the world would how bees fly be important? Because the way many creatures manage to fly can tell us a lot about flying in general. The more we know about flight, the better we can make the things that we build to fly do just that.
It is not unimaginable that the flight capabilities of insects could someday lead to radical and revolutionary designs for manned flight vehicles that may look nothing like the airplanes we are used to seeing today. And to think that such advances could come from studying how bees fly.
