Judges 16

A common theme among the Judges is that they were not always the kind of people we would imagine God raising up on the behalf of His people. Indeed, they were sinners, just like you and I, and sometimes with glaring flaws.

Sampson obviously liked women. It was Sampson’s weakness that God used as a foil to the Philistines, ultimately brining their rule of Israel to ruin. Sampson’s story is not unique to Judges or the Bible though. Just like God called the sinful Sampson from before birth to be His chosen judge, so too are we as Christians called and chosen for God’s special purpose.

Our faith is the key to a new life in Grace. Because we have that new life, we are now charged with living it for the service of the Kingdom. We may not be called to face God’s enemies or to administer His justice, but every one of us is called to spread the Gospel, to engage in works of charity and love, and to constantly strive for the Kingdom we will enter by faith through our actions and words. In that way, our calling us just as powerful as that of Sampson’s, and our effect on the world can be just as great.
