Bible Study for the Day: 1 Samuel 12

1 Samuel 12

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. [Romans 5:8 NASB]

The Israelites realized their sin when Samuel revealed it to them by God’s command, and in Samuel’s reply we see the great mystery of our own salvation, that is that God forgives us in spite of our sin. Even in the midst of their sin, God had already forgiven His chosen people and was working toward their good before they had even repented of that sin.

God did the same for us through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. We did nothing to earn that saving act, rather God saved us before we even realized we needed to be saved. Indeed, our realization of our need for salvation came because the Holy Spirit revealed it to us through the Word. We are saved not because we earned it or deserved it, but because God loves His chosen people enough to save us in spite of our sin.
