20060710 Bible Study for the Day: 1 Samuel 16

1 Samuel 16

God’s plans usually seem inscrutable to us, but we can rest assured that God always knows what is best for us, even when it comes to making the best out of a bad situation that we have created. God warned the Israelites against a king, but they demanded one anyway. In doing so, they got Saul, who defied God’s will in his own arrogance and brashness.

Even then, God did not abandon Israel, even as it endured Saul’s torments by an evil spirit. Instead, God sent Samuel to anoint David as the next king, ensuring that Israel would continue to be ruled by a man chosen by God. God also knew that He was doing something else, far greater than selecting a king. He was also selecting the man who would found the line from which our Savior would come hundreds of years later.

God’s omniscience means that He knows everything about what is happening with us. Whether good or bad, God promises that everything will work toward our good because of our faith in Him. What we have to remember is that good is measured in God’s time and not ours. The good that we anticipate may not even be realized in our lifetimes, but we can rest assured that the ultimate good of all Christians will be realized when we are united with Christ in Heaven.
