20060719 Bible Study for the Day: 1 Samuel 31

1 Samuel 31

God’s will always comes to pass, and so it did with Saul. Saul had been selected by God as His chosen ruler when Israel demanded a king, and just as Israel rebelled against God by rejecting His rulership through priests and judges, so Saul rebelled against God by ignoring His commands and doing his own will through pride and arrogance.

This is a heavy lesson for those of us who live under God’s Grace through our faith in Jesus and His Gospel. We often do not want to think about the consequences of sin, but we must remember those consequences as a warning against our own sinful natures. Salvation certainly freed us from the consequences of sin, but it did not free us to go on sinning. Indeed, the sinful nature was put to death through Jesus’ death, so now we live against sin so that we do not suffer the consequences illustrated to us by the life and death of Saul.
Today ends our study of 1 Samuel. Tomorrow, we will begin our study of Ephesians.
