20060727 Bible Study for the Day- Job 1-3

Today begins our study of the Book of Job. Many people view Job as a tedious book full of difficult and arcane language and concepts, however within those words lay the story of mankind’s sin and God’s grace. Job gives us a unique glimpse into the mind of our creator and savior through the story of one man’s temptation to reject God in the face of adversity. From this story we learn the nature of our relationship with God and with each other.

As with all Bible studies, it is useful to use study guides to help make the material more understandable and to keep the study on track. A good place to start with such a study is the People’s Bible Commentary of Job available from the Northwest Publishing House of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. A public domain commentary is also available at BibleGateway.com, the source of most of the Bible references provided in this study.

This study is part of an ongoing three-year Bible Study first begun on 1 January 2006 that is also available from the WELS.

Job 1-3

Job was struck in the worst sort of way. Most of us would have collapsed under the stress of the things that happened to Job, yet Job retained his faithfulness to his God even in the face of the most extreme adversity. In this way, Job is an example to all of us to remember how to endure whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, remembering that our goal is Heaven and not anything on this earth.
