2 Samuel 5:17-6:23

As David moved the Arc of the Covenant to his new capitol at Jerusalem, he celebrated its arrival in a way that some, specifically his wife Michal, found undignified and shameful. Consider that David was dancing before the Arc essentially in his pajamas. To people like Michal, this was the height of humiliation and shame.

Yet to David, there was no shame in celebrating the Lord’s blessings. God had made him king over Israel, had delivered his enemies into his hands, and had granted that the Arc of the Covenant bless David’s capitol. For David, the joy of celebrating God’s blessings were worth far more that the dignity that some might expect of a king.

Which way does each of us think? Is dignity more important to us than praising our Lord? Do we consider ourselves above praising our God for what He has done for us, even when others might consider such a thing foolish or undignified?

We can take a lesson from David in answering those questions. Consider David’s reply to Michal when she challenged him for his behavior. If the conquering king of Israel was not afraid to be seen as undignified on God’s behalf, then what concern should we have?
