20060928 What Liberal Government Wants You to Do

Liberal governments have struck deeply at the heart of personal liberty recently, casually and carelessly treading into the sacred ground of personal choice to fulfill the agendas of a relatively few people who find themselves in power. Ironically, most Americans seem to have no sense that their liberty is being taken away, even as governments at the local, state, and federal level become more and more bold about telling citizens what they can and cannot do. More ironically, these same citizens seem to condone the demise of their own liberty by continuing to elect these liberal governments in election after election.

Skeptical? Look at the laws that govern personal behavior in most cities and states. What will be discovered by such an inspection is a plethora of food bans, smoking bans, clothing bans, laws demanding ‘political correctness’ and defining opposing opinions as ‘hate speech’. Further, take a look at the political agendas of most liberal politicians, and what will be discovered is the intention to force universality on personal behavior by imposing things like universal education and universal health care on citizens regardless of whether they want to participate or not.

Still not convinced? Then consider whether or not it is good for personal liberty for the likes of the politicians leading Chicago or New York City, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi to be making decisions about what is best for the rest their fellow citizens to do? Some might consider such a pointed accusation partisan, but listen to what these politicians really have to say. These liberals do not want anyone to have the power to make decisions except for themselves, and they want to force everyone to abide by the decisions they make.

The true meaning of liberty is for citizens to be able to decide for themselves what they want or do not want to do. While there should be some consideration of the public good, no perception of public good should universally deprive all people of their liberty because a few people believe something should be a certain way. Certainly, there are limits to this liberty, but such limits should be decided by the citizens, not by the politicians that represent them. Such limits are defined by the Constitution and by common law, and no politician has the right to stray from within the confines of those limits when creating law.

Of course, if the citizens value their liberty, then they will consider these things very carefully when they vote. Continuing to elect politicians who continue to take away liberty will eventually result in there being no liberty at all, and once liberty is lost, how can it be regained?
