20070201 Bible Study for the Day- Matthew 4

Context for Matthew 4

Jesus’ ministry begins in Matthew 4. While Jesus was in the desert being directly tempted by the devil, John the Baptist was imprisoned and executed, ending the age of the prophets and beginning the age of the Kingdom of Heaven. From that moment, Jesus began His proclamation that ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Matthew 4

It is important for us that Jesus was directly tempted by the devil. Not only does that temptation show that Jesus endured the same temptations we all do, it also shows that Jesus endured the same temptation that led Adam and Eve into sin. Jesus’ mission on earth was to fulfill the whole Law, from the first command to the last, for our redemption.

In fact, that Jesus defied the devil to His face brings full circle the story of sin that began with Adam. As Paul tells us, by one man- Adam- sin came into the world, and by one man- Jesus- we receive redemption from our sins. Jesus fulfilled the requirement we could not by ending the tyranny of original sin that condemns us all.
