20070216 Bible Study for the Day- Nahum 2-3

Context for Nahum 2-3

God’s judgment against Nineveh is final and permanent. Nineveh’s sin brought about its destruction, and the city and its people are no more.

Nahum 2-3

It is easy to revel in the destruction of an enemy, believing that destruction to be just, however too often that destruction serves also as a warning to look to one’s own affairs.

The destruction of Nineveh was a warning call to Judah and Jerusalem. God warned Nineveh through the same prophets he warned Judah- repent or face God’s wrath. In both cases, the people of those places knew God’s will- they were warned- and chose to ignore it. In both cases, the consequences were severe and permanent.

What is the warning for us, then? Simply that we too have been warned. The Bible clearly tells us what the path from faith to Heaven looks like, and it is our task as faithful Christians to walk that path with diligence until we reach our destination.

The alternative is to risk the very same kind of judgment that fell upon everyone else who has turned their back on God’s will. This is not to say that we are saved by our works- salvation comes by faith through God’s grace- rather it is to say that we cannot sit idly by once we receive our faith. God gives us a task that we are to do, and failure to do so has its own consequences.

So, the lesson, then, is for each of us to take such a warning to heart and to look to ourselves. God promises to judge His enemies, and we want to be sure we do not find ourselves numbered among them.
