A tale of nations

Worldview Thought of the Day

What kind of a nation are we showing ourselves to be as we let one of our staunchest allies, a nation whose contribution in Iraq is dwarfed only by our own and Great Britain’s, be invaded by another nation that has proven itself over and over again to be one of our most troublesome adversaries.

I’m talking about Georgia and Russia, respectively, of course.

Do I think we should go to war with Russia over Georgia? Perhaps not. Do I think we should make Russia decide whether or not to go to war with us over Georgia? Without a doubt.

I think it is time for the United States to call Russia’s bluff and deploy US Forces inside Georgia–if Georgia will have them–everywhere except the places that were previously contested–South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The Russians claim they are simply supporting the people of those regions. We would simply be supporting the people and the freely elected government of Georgia.

In my opinion, it’s about time the people of the United States put their “spreading freedom and democracy around the world” money where their mouths are. I’m ready. Who’s with me?

Although I agree with your concept, I think we need to give it a smidge more time – 10 more days. Once the Russians depart (this week probably), I would recommend we beef up our physical troop presence in country.say 500 more troops to let them know we are serious. Additionally, we need to get our equipment back this week. If I was a common Georgian, I would agree our response has been less than forceful. I think we provide them some additional resourcing to get their capabilities back up….they definitely got smacked hard.
