Worldview Science Item of the Day
So, CERN is all set to turn on the biggest particle smasher ever sometime on Wednesday. Some people are afraid that the Large Hadron Collider is capable of ending the world.

In case they’re not, the experiments conducted in the collider promise to give scientists a glimpse into the very beginnings of the universe, when things did not quite work the way they do now. What they will discover through this process is really anyone’s guess, but these experiments represent science at its best, even with the presumptions of most of the scientists. I have no doubt that creation will go on testifying to its Creator whatever they might think, and smashing subatomic particles into bits is just cool.
It’s the end of the world as we know it…

So far, so good, then.
It won’t actually start mashing until next month. At the moment, they’re just making sure that the concept works, (containment, superfluid helium-cooled magnets, etcetera.)
It’ll either be really freakin’ cool, or… you know, not.
That’s a good point, Scott. I read somewhere else that the “full energy” collisions (the ones near to the speed of light) will not occur for about a year.
