Saul had been selected by God as His chosen ruler when Israel demanded a king, and just as Israel rebelled against God by rejecting His rulership through priests and judges, so Saul rebelled against God by ignoring His commands and doing his own will through pride and arrogance. 20060718 Bible Study for the Day: 1 Samuel 29-30

Once again, God’s guiding hand steers David toward God’s ultimate destiny for him. Instead of riding out with the Philistines as a traitor to Israel, he is turned away and does not engage in battle against Israel. Because of that, he is able to reclaim the losses inflicted on his people by the Amalekite raid on his city, then his fairness and generosity ingratiated him to both his followers and the leaders of Judah. 20060717 Bible Study for the Day: 1 Samuel 27-28

It can be said that sin begets sin. In Saul’s case this was certainly true. In his pride and arrogance he denied God’s commands for him, successively violating God’s law by his actions and separating himself further and further from God’s Grace. Ultimately, Saul abandon God altogether, seeking the divinations of a medium instead of calling in repentance on his God. Continue reading

David was God’s chosen man, selected by God to lead His people and to establish the house from which His own Son, the Savior of all mankind, would come. Because of this special status, God protected and guided David in all of his dealings, even when men acted evilly against him.
