Jeremiah struggled as any of us would have in the face of the reality of the unfolding judgment against Judah. He lived through the droughts, the invasions, the shifting politics, the exile of kings and princes. He would eventually see Jerusalem sacked, its citizens slaughtered or carried off into slavery. The image of the linen belt or undergarment is important for two reasons. First, God used it as an object lesson as to what Judah’s sin had done to them. They started out new and clean, well taken care of by God’s grace, but once they separated themselves from that grace by their constant sin, they became dirty and destroyed, useless for what God intended them for. Jeremiah was understandably upset. His own people, his own family, had tried to kill him as a result of God’s message, and Jeremiah wanted to know why these people still prospered even when they openly defied God’s will.
