1 Timothy 6:3-21

Being content with what we have is one of the hardest things for humans to do. In fact, this very lack of contentedness, this greed for what we do not possess is the very nature of the sin committed by Eve in the garden.

In this sin of discontent, we find the nature of our fallen state, for it is this greed for more of what the world can provide- wealth and fame- that pulls us away from putting our trust in the salvation given to us by Christ’s death and resurrection. This is not to say that wealth and fame themselves are evil. No, it is the desire of such things over contentedness that is evil.

When we pursue wealth and fame over our salvation, we make those things an idol, replacing Christ and Him crucified and raised with the objects of the world’s lust. What, then, will save us from our sin?

Praise be to God that He gives us this warning through his servant Paul, that we might see wealth and fame for what it is: meaninglessness in the face of the promise we received through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is because of this hope that we can rejoice in Jesus’ own words in Matthew 6:19-34, which end with that great command to seek the kingdom first and let God take care of the rest.
