Deuteronomy 8

Remembering God is a lot harder than it seems like it should be, especially in our modern age of constant distraction. With the influence of radio, TV, movies, the internet, and all of the other mass media the world throws at us, it is easy to become distracted and forget that what we are doing at the moment is in contradiction to what God would have us do with ourselves.

Even worse, our own sinful flesh is in collusion with that distraction, constantly trying to lead us away from God’s Grace to things of the world. This is a constant struggle, to resist the temptation of sin and to concentrate on God’s will for us.

Yet, in the midst of this struggle, we know that we have already won if we remain faithful. If we remain in the Word and continue in the Sacraments, the Holy Spirit will continue to strengthen us against all the temptations the world can throw at us.

In that strength, we can turn our back on the world’s temptations, constantly working toward the Christian notion of ‘in the world but not of it’. In that state, we can rest assured that we are remembering God because He is constantly reminding us of Himself by His gift of the Spirit.
