    Why the focus on cleanliness and purity throughout Leviticus? It might seems strange to some that God spent so much time telling the Israelites how to stay clean. One reason is obvious, because God wanted them to be healthy and free from the diseases that ran rampant in those days.
    The other reason is less obvious. Like physical diseases, sin is a disease of the spirit, and its outward signs are the disease and decay that mark our human experience. So, like the physical cleanliness and purity talked about in Leviticus, the book also talks about the spiritual cleansing and purifying that made a faithful and contrite Israelite clean and pure from sin.
    We Christians are washed clean by the fulfillment of those laws by Jesus Christ. So, like the Israelite who followed the law, we are also clean of our disease of sin before God. Because of this, we can approach God as His children, free from the disease that kept us apart from Him.
