Leviticus 17

The eating of blood is a gory thing to consider, yet God tells the Israelites specifically not to eat blood. Why? Likely because the eating of blood was part of may ancient pagan rituals and symbolized absorbing the life force of the sacrifice. As God tells us in this chapter of Leviticus, the blood is the source of life for the creature, and when poured out before God, it was an offering of atonement for sin.

It was the blood of our Savior, poured out at his crucifixion, that redeemed us before God for our sin and rebellion. Yet, now we see Christ’s body and blood in the sacrament of communion. How can this be? As God told us, the life of the creature is in the blood, so how much less is the life of the savior in the Blood of the Lamb? By this blood we are healed and sealed as children of God, taking into ourselves the life we could not achieve by any other means.
