Hebrews 9:1-15

As we know from Romans 6:23, the wages of sin is death, and we know from our recent study of Leviticus that the only atonement for sin is the lifeblood of a sacrifice. For ages, the Jews before Jesus offered the sacrifices on behalf of their sins, sometimes in the tabernacle, sometimes in the temple. In this unending flow of blood, they marked themselves as sealed to God’s covenant and faithful to His promise of coming salvation.

In Jesus’ death on the cross, we see the fulfillment of that promise by the ultimate shedding of blood. For God ordained that the curse of sin could only be revoked by death, and that revocation came in the form of His perfect, only Son, who lived among us as one of us and then died on our behalf in the bloody spectacle that was His crucifixion.

In that shedding of blood, the need for the sacrifice of atonement came to an end. In Jesus, we find the last sacrifice, perfectly and freely given four our redemption. Now in that sacrifice we have faith, and this is a faith that will not disappoint us, for it is a faith in a promise fulfilled. How much more then can we hope for the promised yet to come?
