Numbers 5:1-6:21

Today’s reading brings into our understanding the person of the Nazirite, that is, someone who has sworn an oath to God to be set apart as a holy ascetic for a period of time. Such an oath was not a permanent commitment, but rather a way for an individual to dedicate himself to the pursuit of understanding God and his will by concentrating on God separate from the normal concerns of daily life.

In our modern times, we might call such an activity a sabbatical- a purposeful retreat- although the modern practice does no justice to the ancient. Yet, the concept is similar enough that it is a convenient comparison. Such retreats are uncommon in our modern faith, much to our loss; because such retreats give us opportunity to realign ourselves with God.

Indeed, taking time to separate ourselves from the world and its everyday pursuits gives us an opportunity to focus on God. We can concentrate on studying His word, praying, fasting, and thinking upon the life, talents, and gifts God has given us. At the end of such a time, we will find that we are refreshed and strengthened, ready to reenter the world as a strong and faithful Christian.

Consider the possibility of such a retreat. It may not be for months or years, but even a day or a weekend dedicated to the purpose of understanding God and our lives is worth the time spent. Spiritual strength is a gift gained by training, just like an athlete trains for his sport, and the dedication of a spiritual retreat is one exercise in a spiritual training regime.
