Numbers 11-12

Being content with what we have is a difficult task for all of us. Indeed, it was such discontent that formed part of the original sin of Adam and Eve in the garden. Sin drives us to always want more, to strive after what we think is better instead of accepting God’s gifts to us for what they are.

This discontentedness turns us away from our real mission as Christians. When we are focused on ‘improving our lot’ we are not focused on the Gospel. As Christ himself told us in Matthew 6:25-34, focus on the Gospel and God will ensure that we have what we need.

This is an important lesson to remember, for failure to do so brings consequences that we are often not prepared for. As the Israelites learned in the lesson of the quail, we also learn that material success is not the salve we hope it to be. In fact, the more we have, the more troubled our lives often become.

Ultimately, we must look to God for what we have, seeking His will for us in the Word and in our daily lives. From that faithfulness springs everything we will need in this life, and the most important need of the promise of our lives in heaven.
