Numbers 18:8-19:22

In the reading for today, God tells Aaron’s household and the Levites what portion of the tithe and the offerings of the Israelites are to be theirs. God promises them an income through the holy rites He commanded to the Israelites, replacing a physical inheritance of land, so that the priests and Levites can concentrate on the task of serving the Lord.

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus presents the new covenant to His new priesthood of believers. He tells us that we are to seek the kingdom of God, setting aside all earthly concerns along the way, and God will see to it that we have the things that we need, just as He ensured the same thing for the priests and Levites of the old covenant.

So, as we work our way through our daily lives, we must always ask ourselves how whatever we are doing is seeking the kingdom. As we focus ourselves on that task, we will find that God will place in our path the work of the kingdom, and because we dedicate ourselves to that work, He will ensure that we have the things we need to get that work done.
