Mark 9:1-29

“Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

Mark 9:24 NASB

“But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ’God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’”

Luke 18:13 NASB

The two quotations above are the most basic, fervent, and honest prayers that any Christian can pray. They meet that criteria because they represent the truth of our sinful human frailty, even in the midst of our saving faith.

Sometimes, we overcomplicate our approach to God in prayer, thinking that we have to be eloquent and know what we are asking for. How often do we consider the words of Romans 8:26-27, where God promises us through the apostle Paul that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we pray, asking for what we do not know how to ask for.

So, while our prayer should be meaningful, it should also be honest and forthright, from the heart of a believer sojourning on this earth to the God who promised to get that believe to heaven. In our prayer, we should cry out ‘Abba, Father, have mercy on me and help my unbelief,’ and be assured that our God has heard us and will give us what we need to reach our heavenly goal.
