The testimony of the faithful became the faith of many. That is the point of the last verses of the Book of Mark. While there is some dispute as to whether these verses were part of the original or were added later to tie up the lose ends in Mark, the point really is that the teachings of these verses are in harmony with the rest of the Gospel. The battle ended with Jesus’ death on the cross. For a fleeting moment, the powers of sin, the world, and the devil shouted their victory. The Pharisees and the other members of the Sanhedrin must have congratulated themselves on how quickly Jesus was gotten rid of and His followers dispersed. As I pointed out in the Bible Study for the Day for yesterday, we often see Jesus’ passion as being a tragic thing. To our sinful eyes, it appears as if Jesus were being defeated by the forces of the world, sin, and the devil, yet if we listen to Jesus even in these hours of humiliation, torture, and ultimately death, we do not see a man, our Savior, defeated by His enemies.
