        DARPA is a defense agency that gets a bad rap in some circles, which is not hard when its business is inventing technology that does not exist yet. Arguably, DARPA is the logical inheritor of the technology legacy that let the US build the first atomic bomb, reach the moon, and build the fastest and highest flying aircraft ever produced.
         Today, DARPA looks for new technology that will give the US warfighter the absolute edge on the battlefield through programs like the DARPA Grand Challenge that encourage small business and academic institutions to contribute to the furtherance of technological development and research.
