Hebrews 12:18-29

The writer to the Hebrews shows us in today’s passage the difference between the covenant that Christ fulfilled and the new covenant that Christ brought to us by the descriptions of the two mountains: the mountain from which God’s law was given and Mount Zion, the holy city of God.

In this allusion, we see the nature of the two covenants, one given to fear and trembling, the other brought to us with the joy of redemption. This allusion, then, shows us the nature of the life under the law and the life under redemption.

Because we are redeemed through our faith in Jesus, we no longer approach God with fear and trembling. Instead, we approach God in confidence, with joy and thanksgiving, because we know that we are heirs of Heaven. In that confidence, we seek God’s will and look for the ways He places in our path to further His kingdom.

This allusion brings the story of salvation and the teaching of Hebrews full circle, showing us the former way under the law which could not save, and the new way under redemption which has already saved us. Because of that salvation, we leave the ways of the law behind and instead look forward to Christ and the Kingdom of Heaven.
