Mark 3:19b-35

Jesus’ family was worried. He traveled almost all of the time. He apparently slept and ate little. Even when He took time to rest, the crowds that constantly followed Him prevented Him from doing so. As a result, Jesus’ mother and brothers decided it was time to take Jesus home.

But, Jesus knew that His mission on earth was to preach the Gospel as he approached Jerusalem for the final time and His destiny with the cross. Jesus looked to the work of salvation, and it was that work that sustained Him, ahead of family, food and rest.

It may seem callous to the modern observer that Jesus seemed to show such disdain for his family who was only trying to help, but Jesus showed us the truth that is hard to accept, and that is that the Gospel, indeed our salvation, is more important than even those most important to us.

As He tells us in verses 34-35, the family of Christ is those who believe in Him and put His word into practice. The same holds true for us today. While our family and friends are beloved, Christ is our life and our promise of heaven. In the end, nothing can come between us and our faith in our Savior, even the ties of blood.
