Mark 5:21-6:6a

Jesus was amazed by the lack of faith among the people of his own town. In that place, where Jesus had grown up and where his family still lived, the people were the most incredulous and doubtful of Jesus’ message and mission.

In our sinful humanity, we are all given to incredulity to the facts, especially about matters of faith. How often do we hear a sermon or read a Bible text and think, “Certainly God cannot really mean that.” In doing so, we show the same incredulity and skepticism that Jesus’ own family and town showed while He was among them.

Yet, in spite of our doubt and disbelief, Jesus still died for our sins and rose for our eternal life. He still sent us the Spirit through the Word and the Sacrament that we might be saved through faith. For this fact, for Jesus’ patience with our rebellions hearts, we thank Him even more for His sacrifice on our behalf.
