1 Peter 5

Doing what is right is sometimes the greatest challenge one can face, especially when that challenge is presented in the context of a hierarchy. When one is in charge, it is sometimes difficult not to take advantage of being in charge, and when one is subordinate, sometimes it is difficult not to rebel. This is true in our churches just as much as anywhere in life. We often struggle with the notion of someone being in charge, or struggle with being in charge ourselves. Yet, God established that there are those who are in charge within His Church and those that are to follow.

This hierarchy is not in place so that those who lead can lord it over those who do not, but rather so that, in all things, the good order of the Church can be maintained so that all eyes can remained fixed on the Gospel. That is why Peter exhorts each of us to remember our places and to use those places to the good of our Churches and the Gospel. Our place is to do God’s will, wherever we find ourselves, and to do it with a joyful and submissive heart.
