Science and Technology Brief

Welcome to the inaugural biweekly Science and Technology post. These posts will serve as a review of interesting science and technology happening around the world as well as a venue for periodic original articles on science and technology subjects.

Space Tourism

CNN

For those with an interest in space and the commercial development of space, now is the early golden era for that development. Much like the Wright Brothers of the beginning of the last century, these entrepreneurs are treading on territory some said, not too long ago, was impossible.

I believe that, during our lifetimes, the commercial development of space will become the kind of reality science fiction writers have imagined for decades. I will even go so far as to speculate that the first manned mission to Mars will likely be a civilian entrepreneurial one, even beating the Chinese.

Giant Dinosaurs

Fox News

The more dinosaurs we discover- thereby ever increasing the sample size- the more we learn about these fascinating creatures and the world in which they lived. Eventually, these discoveries will show us that world in detail, and I wonder what it will actually look like.

The Windows Mac

Fox News

Hide your children and lock the doors! A horrible creature has been unleashed upon mankind. Yes, just like the human mimicking drones of Terminator, there are now Macintosh computers masquerading as PCs.

All kidding aside, the technical challenge of running both Mac OS and Windows on Apple Computers’ new breed of Intel based Macintoshes has been completed. As part of an ad hoc contest, two computer tinkerers have successfully made such a Mac dual boot between Mac OS and Windows.

While many users of both PCs and Macs, whose traditional battlelines have long since been drawn, may cringe at such an arrangement, the truth is that the ability to dual boot the two OSs gives Intel based Mac users before unavailable freedom.

This freedom is hopefully the future of all computing platforms, where the user can determine what OS to run based upon the current users needs. Such freedom would add a new and powerful element to the PC arsenal and could very well spell the next chapter in the advancement of computing.

Ancient Greek Tombs

Fox News

The ancient Greek world is one of the most fascinating periods of ancient Western history. In the ancient Greeks we had a culture that rivaled our own modern one for its sophistication relative to the rest of the world. We owe a considerable debt to our Greek forbearers, because it is their philosophy, science, and politics that laid the foundation for our own modern world.
