2 Samuel 8-9

David’s greatness as a man is reinforced by his compassion as a friend. David did not forget his friend Jonathan, and sought out some way to honor his friend even after he was gone. In this way, David not only remembered Jonathan, but also helped heal the rifts that surely remained in Israel after Saul’s defeat and David’s establishment as the king of Israel.

In David’s actions, we can find another example to follow in our own lives. David could have been vindictive, dismissing the house of Saul. Instead, he reached out to those once called his enemies and sought to bring them into the peace and prosperity he enjoyed.

While we may not be kings or rulers, how often do we let squabbles developed with friends or family to endure well past when the issues that started those squabbles are gone or even forgotten? How often do we reach out to others who we think have done something against us and offer peace? That is where David’s example comes to play. So, the next time you have the opportunity, heal a rift instead of widening it. in doing so, you are acting in the way God wants all of us to.
