Psalms 56-57

One of the most remarkable things about the Psalms of David is his constant, unwavering faith in his God. Even when surrounded by enemies and threatened with death, even when all hope seems to be lost, David calls out to God, not because he seeks to avoid his fate, but because He seeks the fulfillment of his hope in God, either in victory or in Heaven.

How often to we share that same faith with David? How often do we allow the cares of the world to overwhelm us, never realizing that all we have to do is turn to our God to receive the strength to carry on? Too often, indeed, for that is our sinful nature, and that is why God places reminders like David’s Psalms in His Word to call on Him when we are beset.

Does calling on God mean that our troubles will go away? Hardly! Rather, it means that we will have the strength to bear up under them and the clarity to navigate them skillfully. It means that we will be reminded by the Spirit through faith that these troubles are nothing compared to the promise of eternal life that we have in Heaven. That promise is the purpose of our struggle and our prayer.

Too bad many churches today preach that if you pray hard enough, all your troubles will go away and you will live a happy life. I certainly don’t remember reading anything like that in the Bible!
