20060913 Bible Study for the Day- Psalms 58-59

Psalms 58-59

What gives King David the right to be so judgmental in so many of his Psalms? Who is he, a sinner just like the rest of us, to call on God to put down evildoers? David does not speak from his own desire, but from a desire created in him by the Spirit for God’s Will to be done. David’s prayer is not one of self-righteousness, but rather one for God to fulfill His promises to His faithful.

While our prayers today may take a different form, they come from the same Spirit. We pray that God’s Kingdom will come and that His Will is done, and God’s Will has always been the same: that all we acknowledge Him as their God and turn from sin to His Righteousness and that those who continue to do evil be vanquished.

Such a statement might be a harsh thing for some, however it makes it no less true. In our prayer we want all sinners to be saved, but we acknowledge by that same prayer that some will not be. In praying so, we pray not only for God’s Righteousness, but also His Judgment, both of which we trust in by faith.
