20060914 Bible Study for the Day- Psalm 60

Psalm 60

Upon a cursory read, one might think that the writer of this Psalm, King David, believes that God has rejected him and Israel. Of course, such a conclusion is not true, and God abandoned neither David nor Israel to its enemies.

Instead, this Psalm is a reminder to its readers to call upon God rather than relying upon our own strength, whether things are going well or we are beset on every side by troubles. Only with God can we be assured of success, and this is not success on worldly terms, but success in terms of the Kingdom.

Psalm 60 is a call to cry out to God, and it is a reminder that God hears that cry. David and Israel were saved the day that Psalm was written from its enemies, not so that David could rule and earthly kingdom or so that his house could flourish, but because David and Israel’s survival fit into God’s plan to bring His Son to us as our Savior.

And David had faith in that promise, which is why He could cry out to God for help, even in the midst of a threat from his enemies, knowing that God would surely help him reach is goal, which was not so much victory that day as Heaven. In the same, faith, we also cry out to God, and He will help us reach the same goal.
