Deuteronomy 29-30

Deuteronomy 30:11-20 is an exhortation to do the Lord’s will that is just as relevant to us today as it was to the Israelites preparing to cross into the Promised Land. How so? Because it calls on us to dedicate ourselves to the Lord’s will, a will that is not somehow distant or yet to be revealed, but a Will that is among us, in our hearts and minds, through the power of the Word and the Sacraments.

Only in the Will of God is life to be found. Outside His will are sin, death, and the power of the devil. Between us and God’s will are two things, either the Law that condemns or faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. God’s will is that all men believe in Jesus and be saved from the condemnation of the law of sin.

So, like the Israelites, we are faced with a task put upon us by faith, and that task is to live our faith with earnestness so that we can be sure that our faith will not be taken from us by our own temptation and by the constant threat of the world and the devil. And for those who are found to be faithful, the eternal promise of Heaven awaits.
