Deuteronomy 31

How amazing is God’s love for us that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us? [ Romans 5:8] He demonstrated that same love for the Israelites as they prepared to cross over into the land promised to their forefathers, knowing full well that they would eventually rebel against his commands and fall away.

That reality is the amazing testament of God’s grace to sinful humanity. God knows that we are sinners, and that even in Grace, we continue to sin. Yet, in spite of our own rejection of God, He still showers His grace upon us, remembering our sin no more.

There is a warning here, however. Just because God’s grace is infinite does not mean that we should go on seeking out din. As Paul warns us, to seek out sin is to deny God’s grace, a Grace that includes not only Justification, which rescues our souls from sin and eternal damnation in Hell, but also Sanctification, which leads us to deny our sinful nature and to focus ourselves on things above, of which sin has no part.

Because of this fact, we should heed God’s warning, both the Israelites and throughout the Bible. We must be not only aware of God’s promise to us, but also aware of our own proclivity to turn out back on that promise. Through faithful reading of the Word, regular participation in the Sacrament, constant corporate worship and fellowship, and regular prayer, we must protect and shield ourselves behind God’s grace so that we are not lost to sin before we reach out goal of Heaven.
