Absalom’s rebellion against David continues in the history of intrigue that marred the reigns of the first kings of Israel, intrigue that those kings and ultimately their people brought on themselves by failing to do God’s Will. In this rebellion, we see the ever-present nature of sin and its consequences.
Absalom’s rebellion reminds all of us that our actions have consequences. There were many reasons for that rebellion- David’s failure to deal with the rape of his daughter Tamar, his failure to deal with the murder of his own son by Absalom, his dealings with Absalom himself-, but the most significant for us was the fact that God had foretold those consequences as a result of David’s sin with Bathsheba.
This is a lesson we should take to heart in our own lives when the temptation to sin is upon us. If for any other reason, the desire to avoid the consequences should be a motivation for us to avoid that sin. In doing so, we then adhere to God’s Will for us and set the stage for God to do even greater things in our lives.
