Deuteronomy 24-25

An orderly society is a society of laws, and the most orderly society must be one that lives by the Laws of God. That is one of the themes that plays throughout the first five books of the Old Testament as God sets aside the descendents of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as His Chose People.

Not only has God chosen these people, but He has given them His law. In doing so, God sets out the way in which an orderly society also becomes a holy one, one consecrated to God and to God’s will. In that consecration, the people of Israel become the inheritors of God’s promises, the greatest of which is the coming of the Savior.

Christians today are inheritors of that Law fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, our Savior. It was Jesus who completed the work of the Law, setting us free from sin, death, and the power of the devil and giving us a place in the Kingdom of God to be revealed.

As inheritors of that fulfillment, we now live under a new standard, that is the standard of those made righteous by faith. Under that standard, we live lives pleasing to God, following his commands of holiness, out of thanksgiving for His salvation. Just as the Law handed to the Israelites made them an orderly society, in the same way, the lives of Christians lived in dedication to God’s purpose lends order to our society today.

In that way, Christian citizens of any land should look to God, the Word and to themselves as the catalyst by which society is steered for the better. The example of our lives, set apart by Christ for the work the Father has prepared for us, helps keep our nations sound and firmly based on the law by which all societies must prevail.
